THE GOSPEL Lesson 1 Note: Instructions on how to fill in the answers are located at the bottom... In Acts 17:10-11, the people from Berea (the Bereans) searched the Scriptures daily to make sure what they were being taught was true. We must be like the Bereans and examine everything we are taught to make sure it perfectly matches the Bible. I. Matthew 7:21 A. If a person calls Jesus 'Lord,' does that automatically mean he or she is going to Heaven? ________ B. Who will enter the kingdom of Heaven? ______________________________ II. Luke 6:46 A. If a person rejects any teaching of God's Word, has that person truly made Jesus "Lord' of their life? ________ B. Note: The word "gospel" means "good news." 1Corinthians 15:1-4 says the gospel is the good news that Jesus died, was buried and raised from the dead the third day. B. Since Christ shed His blood at His death, lets see how we get into Christ and into His death... turn to Romans 6:3-4... XIII. Romans 6:3-4 A. According to verse 3, how does one get INTO Christ? ________________. B. Since the blood of Jesus redeems us to God and forgives us of sin, and since Jesus' blood was shed at His death, according to verse 3, how does one get INTO Christ's death? _____________________. C. Note: Baptism is a burial, not a sprinkling or a pouring. True Bible baptism is when a person, who believes the good news (gospel), is buried in water. XIV. Colossians 2:11-12 A. According to verse 12, at what point does Jesus circumcise (cuts away) our sin? ______________________________________________________ Again, baptism is a burial, not a sprinkling. Also, notice how in verse 12 faith is required? Baptism is a response of faith. See Mark 16:16. XV. John 3:3-5 A. In order for a man to be born again, what two "elements" must he be born of in order to enter the kingdom of heaven? _______________ and ______________. XVI. Matthew 16:13-19 A. After Peter confessed Jesus as being the Christ, the son of the Living God, what did Jesus give to him in verse 19? ____________________________. B. What are "keys" used for? ____________________________. C. Judging from John 3:5, the "keys to the kingdom" involves both water and ______________. D. Since Jesus gave Peter the "keys to the kingdom", who will be the first to tell people how to specifically enter the kingdom? _____________. E. OK. Lets see if the Bible is consistent.....turn to Acts 2:36-42 XVII. Acts 2:37-38 A. The word "repent" in the Greek means "change your mind". Then he tells them to be baptized in the name of Jesus for the forgiveness of sins (born of water). Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (born of Spirit). See the consistency between John 3:5, Matthew 16:19 and Acts 2:38?______. C. According to this verse, give the two reasons why a person must be baptized? 1. ____________________ 2. ____________________ Note: The reason why baptism is for the remission (or forgiveness) of sins is because, as Colossians 2:11-12 indicates, Jesus circumcises us of sin at baptism. After the people repented and were baptized, what four things did they devote themselves to? New Testament Conversions Examples Note: Asking Jesus to come into one's heart to be saved is commonly taught in most churches today. It is called the Sinner's Prayer. Is this what the Bible teaches? 1. Acts 2:37-41 A. When the people wanted to be saved, what did Peter tell them to do? ___________ and be __________. B. What did those who accepted his message do?_________________. C. Now, did Peter tell them "repent and ask Jesus to come into your heart for the remission (forgiveness) of your sins and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit"? ___________. 2. Acts 8:12 A. When the people believed Philip as he preached of the kingdom of Christ and of the good news (gospel), what did they do? __________________. B. Jesus used Scripture to refute Satan. The Word of God destroys the lies of Satan. In verses 6-7, Satan used Scripture and Jesus told him "it is ALSO written...". We must do the same whenever someone tries to use Scripture to fight Scripture. For example, lets say a person tries to use Scripture against Scripture, using Jesus' example in Matthew 4:6-7, what would you tell them? _____________________________________________________ 2.
